WEDNESDAY 04 AUGUST 2010 // A SIGN OF THE TIMES

Anyone that knows me knows that i'm a lover of a good sign. The older, the rustier, the more decayed or broken down the better. I've never really understood what my fixation with old hand painted signs is truthfully about but I see them as reminder of a time where even the simplest of words, phrases or pictures were either painted or constructed onto surfaces by a person who made a living from this as their artform. A person who spent a lifetime focusing on their artform. During a time before computer shortcuts, fonts and vinyl cut lettering where the focus on the art of it was just as important as the sign itself. Much unlike the sterile signage often found today where any novice with a computer and email can whip up a sign and send it to the printers. Well stop right here because some dedicated members of TypArchive, an image library primarily focused on hand painted signage are keeping the memories alive. The objective is to amass a comprehensive global collection of a high-quality images and produce hard-copy volumes. A great resource for any sign lover. www.typarchive.com

TUESDAY 03 AUGUST 2010 // OLLY MOSS POSTERS FOR ROLLING ROADSHOW

Talented poster artist Olly Moss was recently asked to create advertising images for nine of the shows for the upcoming 2010 Alamo Drafthouse / Levi’s Rolling Roadshow tour.  If you ain't heard of the Roadshow then get this… it's a whole bunch of FREE screenings of classic movies outdoors in the places they were filmed and/or where they take place throughout the U S of A. So this year, for example, you’ll be able to catch Dirty Harry at San Francisco’s Washington Square Park or The Blues Brothers at Chicago’s Joliet Prison. Pretty freekin cool! On top of this there will also be amazing merchandise for sale along with special guests (dirty harry himself maybe??) check it out here: www.rollingroadshow.com

TUESDAY 03 AUGUST 2010 // DFACE GETTING REAL

Just recently the folk at REAL Skateboards and London based street artist and skater D*Face teamed up for a collection of pro-model skate decks. D*Face created 3 deck graphics specific to Pete Ramondetta, Dennis Busenitz and Justin Brock. In addition, D*Face painted a huge replica of the BROCK graphic on a wall in London and Justin Brock flew in to skate the actual painting. Pretty freakin cool and it's no wonder why the Wooden Toy crew almost peed there pants when they discovered this little gem. Skateboards, wood, art? does it get any better of combination? i think not!check it all out at www.realskateboards.com

FRIDAY 30 JULY 2010 // OUTSIDE INFINITY EXHIBITION BY JAMES REKA

Man i cant believe that it's the end of July already. Wasn't it the 1st of July like 3 days ago? Shiiiiit! Where does time go huh? sometimes i think to myself that there's definately some guy that sits there and just likes to rip it out from under you. Why can't time be infinite huh? The only good thing about it being the end of the month already is that Melbourne based artist James Reka will be showing his latest collection of works titled 'Outside Infinity' at 19 Karen Gallery, 19 Karen Ave, Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, QLD. The show opens this Saturday 31 July 2010 6-8pm and continues until 28 August. With influences in pop culture, cartoons and illustration, Reka creates his own world of mysterious creatures that communicate though colour and movement, based around the style of abstracted fantasy and surrealism. Reka's new paintings are amazing... this show is not to be missed if you are up north. More info here - www.rekaone.com
