ABOUT WOODEN TOY PUBLISHING CO
WOODEN TOY PUBLISHING CO // A FEW THINGS ABOUT US.

Welcome to the Wooden Toy Publishing Co. The ‘award winning’ and independent micro-publishing house that everyone’s been talking about - You know, the one that’s been shoving aside all the boundaries, breaking the rules and is more different than the time you saw your grandpa in fluoro speedos! That’s pretty different.

The Wooden Toy Publishing Co was founded in late 2005 by Melbourne born art director, artist, magazine junkie and ping pong afficienado Timba Smits. Born through a combination of loves, instinct and determination, The Wooden Toy Publishing Co has become Timba, Josie and Jay's sharpened desire to design, publish and distribute the most unique, limited and collectible art & design related magazines, books and products the world has ever seen.

Timba is also a guest curator of Gorker Gallery, a cutting edge contemporary art space in Melbourne's premier art precinct, Fitzroy.

WOODEN TOY QUARTERLY // OUR PRIMARY PUBLICATION.

Wooden Toy Quarterly is possibly the most design-heavy contemporary culture and art publication ever printed in Australia. Appealing to creative addicts and culture fiends alike, the award winning Wooden Toy Quarterly presents a taste of international creative culture and art as a lifestyle that cannot be separated from a love of brilliant graphic design, mammoth features, art and photography.

With 5000 individually numbered copies distributed 2 times per year, Wooden Toy Quarterly is not only a publication worth collecting for its themed editions alone, but for its aim to document and highlight emerging and established creatives that have in some way been influenced by contemporary culture, design and art while drawing in the creatives that we think can be, and are an influence and inspiration to others.

WOODEN TOY QUARTERLY // IT'S EVOLUTION.

Believe it or not, WOODEN TOY WAS ONCE A STREETKID. Yes indeed, editions one through three (‘Launch’, ‘Versus’ and ‘Vintage’ consecutively) were carefully distributed as free street press magazines throughout Australia during 2006 and early 2007, with 6000 copies per issue being lifted from the streets with a 100% pick up rate – Thank-you soo much.

Then it grew and put on a little weight. If you’re thinking book, you’d be close. Magazine? Similar. It’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that combined to produce a journal worthy of the library shelves but still dedicated to it’s original (and still the best) audience who lovingly caress it’s giant sized 156 pages! Not only that but with it’s amazing, oversize measurements of 225mm x225mm (Va va voom!) you’ll find Wooden Toy Quarterly filled to the brim with deep delving interviews and features; greater diversity; more substance; more illustration; more imagery; more of the ‘why’ that got people picking it up in the first place; and more reasons for people to pick it up in the future. Not only that but each individually numbered copy comes wrapped snugly in its own custom packaging (designed specifically per issue), stuffed with an embarrassing amount of extra goodies (which also change issue to issue to suit content).

With an ever expanding readership (yes circulation is growing) and an evolution that would make Darwin blush, I think it’s fair to say that Wooden Toy Quarterly IS where it’s at!
